On March 6, 1954, Delbert was united in marriage to Carolyn Anne (Piekkola) in New York Mills. Their marriage was blessed with six children. Delbert and Carolyn purchased their farm, east of New York Mills in 1963. Delbert was employed as a semi-truck driver for Northern Co-op of Wadena, Cenex and Lund Boat Factory of New York Mills – retiring in 1990. Delbert continued to farm the land, last spring he worked up over 400 acres of land and was looking forward to spring so he could be back in the tractor again.
Delbert was a lifetime member of the Charles D. Center VFW Post #3269 in New York Mills. He enjoyed traveling; cruising Alaska, the Panama Canal and the Caribbean. Delbert and Carolyn also made numerous trips for extended visits to Nashville to see his sister-in-law Nancy. One of his favorite pastimes was collecting pennies, he took great pride in making penny books for his many grandchildren. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings.
Delbert was known to be a joke and story teller. He was the inventor of the ‘Magic Ball’ in the paper bag – entertaining many young children throughout his life. Some people thought he was a Tony Curtis look-alike. Delbert was an avid player of the harmonica and accordion. His pride and joy were watching all his grandchildren growing up and prospering. He loved going to their lake cabin and sharing it with family. Delbert and Carolyn were always seen together, visiting with family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
On January 29, 2018, Delbert entered eternal rest at Perham Hospital with his loving family by his side. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Preceded in death by his parents; son Ronald; siblings: Donald Bernu; Dorothy Ranta; and brother-in-law Rudy Ranta.
Survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; children: Roger (Marilyn) Bernu; Virgil Bernu; Vincent (Jan) Bernu; Sherri (Ricky) Koehler; Steven Bernu; siblings: Dorla (Marlow) Salo; Darwin (June) Bernu; Duane (Irene) Bernu; sister-in-law, Arlene Bernu; daughter-in-law, Carol Bernu; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends.
