Alice Emelia Koennicke was born on February 12, 1923 at her parent’s home in Homestead Township, rural New York Mills, Minnesota. Her parents were the late Albert and Emelia Herminnie (Jorgenson) Koennicke. Alice was confirmed on May 9, 1937 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Perham, MN. She was employed as a waitress at Stolls Café in Perham, and later at Welter Brothers Grocery.
On May 15,1945 Alice was united in marriage with George William Mattfeld at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Perham, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with four children. Alice and George made their home in Pine Lake Township where they raised their family and farmed, retiring in 1994.
In 1995 Alice and George made their home on Rush Lake where they enjoyed fishing year-round, having family and friends over to visit. It was always a “Hot Spot” for many card game and good food.
Alice was an excellent cook, entertaining relatives quite regularly. She loved to quilt, crochet, sew, read, watch sports, and of course fish. Her grandchildren always brought a twinkle to her eye.
Alice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New York Mills, MN where she participated on the Centennial Committee, The Trinity Quilters, and Trinity LWML. She was also a leader for the Pine Lake Hustlers 4-H Club, and the Pine Home Homemakers Club. After George’s passing, Alice enjoyed volunteering at Perham Living.
Alice’s husband George, passed away on January 30, 2012. She continued to reside on Rush Lake, Ottertail, MN until early 2017. Alice left a beautiful legacy to all who knew her. Preceding Alice in death were her parents; husband, George; sisters: Eleanor Beringer and Laverne Koennicke; brother, George (Jeannie) Koennicke; granddaughter, Lynn Marie Davis.
Alice is survived by her children: Cynthia (Robert) Davis of Ottertail; Kayleen (Howard) Imsande of Brainerd; Richard (Betty) Mattfeld of Underwood, KariLee (Rick) Anderson of Brainerd; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; brother Albert (Marcella) Koennicke of Fergus Falls; brother-in-law, Alvin (Margaret) Mattfeld of New York Mills; sisters-in–law Gladys (Henry) Ramus of Perham; Ardene Bartness of Puyallup, Washington; many other relatives and a host of friends.
